Here's me wearing an EEG cap and other various electrophysiology equipment!
Hi, everyone!
My name is Leela and I'm a rising 4th year and President of External Affairs of Nu Rho Psi. I was hoping to participate in a research fellowship this summer, but due to the pandemic, my internships were cancelled. Thankfully, my wonderful research mentor offered me funding to continue my research for my thesis project, using electroencephalography to characterize social engagement between autistic children and their parents. Although my in-person work has been halted, I have been working on a literature review examining social engagement from different angles in preparation for my senior thesis. This project has allowed me to read articles from a wide range of disciplines ranging across neuroscience, education, and psychology. I've also been working on a paper examining cognitive functions of subcortical brain structures and ways in which research techniques can be modified to facilitate study of the subcortex. Lastly, I virtually attended the annual conference International Society for Autism Research (INSAR). This was an amazing experience, as I was able to learn about the ways in which researchers from across the world are collaborating to continue pursuing groundbreaking research even during these uncertain times. Webinar recordings will be posted in the next week (on or before June 10th), in case any of you are interested!
All things considered, I've learned a lot this summer despite the limitations of research due to the COVID-19 pandemic! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about finding summer research opportunities in neuroscience or initiating an independent project. Stay safe, everyone!
